What causes a body of water to turn to a green color?
Eutrophication is when too many nutrients enter a body of water. They can get there from run off water that carries nutrients from farms and lawns that have fertilizer or chemicals that contain these nitrates and phosphates.
When these nutrients enter a body of water, they cause an algal bloom. The green that you see in the left part of the picture above is caused by the algal bloom. An algal bloom is a huge growth of algae.
Algal blooms cause a huge problem; they deplete the amount of dissolved oxygen in a body of water. Dissolved oxygen is used by fish and other organisms in the water. Those organisms then do not have the oxygen that they need to survive, so many of them die.
